Kids, The War, And Vets

Published by laydecker at 6:37 am under Parenting, Uncategorized Edit This

The war is on every day on every channel and if there is a T.V. in the house the kids are bound to see it. I’m sure plenty of those kids ask questions about what the reasons are for the way. My kids think the war is “STUPID” and they want the troops to go home. My daughter has a friend that may be being sent to Iraq and she is, of course, worried for him. My son who is 12 asked me if the war is still going to be going on when he turns 18. He wants to know if he will have to go to war.. What am I supposed to tell them? I don’t know any more what the war is being fought for, I used to know but the news has things so distorted that I just don’t know any more. I keep telling my kids that we have to support the troops both active and retired. I remind them of all of the things the soliders give up to fight for our country. No matter what those soldiers need our support, our love, and our prayers because they have their lives on the line every day. I see how poorly some of the retired soldiers are treated. I have a close friend who served in the Iraqi war. I see how difficult it is to get medical treatment. He has to get a ride to get to the VA because the closest one is hours away. I know how little is available to him and the things that he and other soldiers like him need. I also see that he is not appreciated by most people. Once he came home from the war he was forgotten. I don’t want my kid’s generation to be like that. They are going to be the ones who have to take care of today’s soldiers and I would hope the soldiers are treated with the love and respect that they deserve. SO my words for them when they ask about the war is that no matter what any one says about the war or no matter how they feel about the war the soldiers are the ones that need our support, both they and their families deserve it.
