more on puberty with a mental illness By:laydecker

As you can see I have been focused on children’s mental health the last couple of days with puberty looming over my son’s head. My oldest daughter went through hell when she hit puberty. It’s still not easy on her but much better than when she first started. She would have her normal teen ups and downs but then sometimes they would be so extreme all she could do was sit there rocking herself and cry.

My middle child has only had normal hormonal mood swings. No sign of any mental health issues as of today but she is only 13 so I guess I will just have to wait and see how she does. So far so good, I just got to keep my fingers crossed!

My son is the only one who is starting out before puberty with problems. I hope he pulls through ok. I know when I hit puberty I hit a really dark period in my life and it only got worse when I hit my 20’s. I want so much more for my kids. It makes me sad to think that my disease could be carried on to my kids. If something goes wrong with them I will feel responsible even though I have no control over my or their hormonal balance. It’s difficult being in this position not knowing what kind of emotional influence you are going to have over your children.

My prayers are with your family. They told us my step son was ADHD and for years he was guennie pigged on several different types of pills. The pills would work for a few short months then stop working, so it was a new set of pills to try. Just a few months ago we sent him to a mental health hospital that we had not used before. They ran all sorts of tests on him and monitored him closely and then dropped the bomb shell on us. He was never ADHD that is why the pills did not work and in fact were making him worse. They diagnosed him with Aspergers Syndrome and yes I still cant spell that word. It is a form of autism that is genetic. My husband recalls symptoms from his childhood that match his son’s. Only his is milder than his son’s. My husband and I feel so bad because his behavior did not add up to ADHD so we thought he did this stuff on purpose, now we know that it does add up to the form of autism that he has and we know he got it from his Daddy. He is 9 right now and we were told puberty may lessen the effects of the aspergers as we discovered is what happened to my husband or it may make it worse. It was good reading your blog post as no matter what the illness is, it is always good to know that as parents we are not in this dark oblivion alone.

    Hi,
Thanks for commenting on my site. I notice that you have tried several things to get more traffic to your page such as entrecard. I have been using Blgexplosion although I have no idea if it is allowed. Some say yes and other say no. However, Today has accepted the visits. It is very frustrating when you see the top people at Today getting thousands of unique hits each day. I will make you a deal though. I will check out both of your Today pages every day that I am able if you will check out mine. I only have one right now, http://gardendiva.today.com/
